If you play it by ear, you decide what to say or do in a situation by responding to events rather than by following a plan which you have decided on in advance.

'play it by ear' 한다고 하면, 미리 결정한 계획을 따르기보다는 사건에 반응하여 상황에 따라 말하거나 행동할 내용을 결정함

 

They have planned the first 12 months of their adventure but after that intend to play it by ear.
