used when you want to say how doing something would make it possible to avoid something unpleasant

불쾌한 일을 피할 수 있게 하는 방법을 말하고 싶을 때 사용

 

ex)

If only she'd listen to what he's saying, I'm sure they could solve the problem.

그녀가 그의 말을 듣기만 한다면, 문제를 해결할 수 있을 거라고 확신해요.

 

 

 

You use 'if only' with past tenses to introduce what you think is a fairly good reason for doing something, although you realize it may not be a very good one.

무언가를 하는 데에 대한 상당히 좋은 이유를 소개하기 위해 그것이 썩 좋은 이유가 아닐 수도 있다는 것을 알고 있으면서도 과거 시제와 함께 'if only'를 사용

 

ex)

She writes me often, if only to scold me because I haven't written to her.

내가 그녀에게 편지를 쓰지 않아서 나를 꾸짖기 위해서라도 종종 나에게 편지를 쓴다.

 

 

 

1. used to express a strong wish, especially when you know that what you want cannot happen

특히 원하는 일이 일어날 수 없다는 것을 알고 있을 때, 강한 소망을 표현하는 데 사용

 

ex)

If only he had talked to her sooner!

그가 그녀에게 좀 더 빨리 말을 걸었더라면!

 

 

2. used to give a reason for something, although you think it is not a good one

좋지 않다고 생각하더라도 무언가에 대한 이유를 제시할 때 사용

 

ex)

Media studies is regarded as a more exciting subject, if only because it’s new.

미디어 연구는 새로운 분야이기 때문에라도 더욱 흥미로운 학문으로 여겨진다.
